On 7th March 2024, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) issued a notice to all tourism businesses and visitors during the holy fasting month of Ramadhan 2024.

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism requests collaboration from all tourism businesses to ensure a respectful atmosphere for both residents and visitors in Zanzibar. This period is one of the five Pillars of Islam, observed from dawn until sunset, and it calls for our collective understanding and harmony during this month.

  1. Adjustment of Operating Hours:
A request to restaurants not within hotels to modify their service hours, remaining closed during daylight to honor the fasting practices. Operations may resume after sunset.
  2. Service in Accommodations:
Hotels and similar establishments are requested to provide food and beverage services within their premises only.

As part of our community, all tourism businesses are asked to guide their guests on the importance of respecting local customs during Ramadhan:

  1. Modesty and Respect:
Inform visitors to dress modestly and to be mindful of local sensitivities. Public consumption of food, drinks, smoking, and displays of affection should be avoided.
  2. Cultural Immersion:
Ramadhan is an opportunity for visitors to learn about and experience the rich cultural traditions of Ramadhan in Zanzibar. Your role in advising and guiding visitors during this period is of high importance in order to foster a respectful and inclusive environment.
